Fylde coast photographers could make their precious snaps become the image of Blackpool this year. Mayor of Blackpool Kath Rowson is encouraging residents to send in their best photos of the resort as part of a competition to be on the front of the annual civic Christmas card.
The Mayor’s Christmas card is sent out as a festive greeting from Blackpool to dignitaries, business leaders and community leaders throughout the town, as well as being sent to twin town Bottrop, as well as Her Majesty the Queen and the Prime Minister. Normally the pictures for the Christmas card are taken from Blackpool Council’s library of images. However, this year the selection has been opened up to the town’s army of amateur photographers.
The images must show Blackpool off as a resort and retain a seasonal theme, with the winning entry being picked by the Mayor herself.
Cllr Kath Rowson, Mayor of Blackpool, said: “I get to see so many wonderful images of Blackpool on the internet, from sunsets on the Promenade to wide shots of our wonderful beaches. Quite often they aren’t taken by professional photographers but by regular people who just spot a stunning view and have to get a photo. They are brilliant pictures and a great way to show off our resort as well as the talented people who live here. The winning entry will get sent off on the front of my Christmas card to people across the town, as well as to a few special dignitaries at Buckingham Palace and 10 Downing Street.
“I know there are some talented photographers in Blackpool and I am really looking forward to seeing the images that are sent through.”
As well as seeing their chosen design on the front of the card, the winning photographer will also scoop a special Christmas prize, with a family ticket to go and watch Charles Dicken’s classic Great Expectations at the Winter Gardens, as well as a free visit around Illuminasia.
Great Expectations will run at the Winter Gardens from 10 December to 7 January, starring Adam Rickett, Maureen Nolan, Chris Ellison and Helena Blackman.
Illuminasia is Blackpool’s must-see family attraction at the wonderful Winter Gardens. The world’s largest indoor illumination experience blends traditional Chinese lantern crafts with the latest in lighting technology, and boasts hundreds of incredible structures covering thousands of square feet within the Olympia Exhibition Hall.
To submit your image, email it to [email protected] before 30 October with your name and the subject ‘Christmas card competition’. You must also give confirmation that you personally took the image that you are submitting. Images must contain a winter or Christmassy theme and be at least 1MB in size. The decision on a winning picture will be made by the Mayor and will be final, with the winning photographer notified in November.
