Fabulous Forties at Blackpool Winter Gardens

Stormy Weather

It was a night of contrasts at the Winter Gardens last Friday. The Chemical Brothers were the headline act in the Empress Ballroom. For those after something completely different Aunty Social were showing the 1943 film classic Stormy Weather. As one of those who opted for cinematic treats over block rockin’ beats I had a great evening out.

The Winter Gardens is a very versatile venue, and the event was held in the Grand Foyer (aka ‘The Grand Foyer Club’ for the evening). It really was a superb choice for a period piece, and the cabaret style seating allowed for plenty of social interaction before and after the screening. The only drawback was that it was a little chilly for some attendees.

Talking to those at our table revealed one of them had secured the last available ticket. I had been concerned the atmosphere might be a little flat as tickets were available close to the night, so it was a relief to be part of a full and vibrant venue. A large number of the audience had made a great effort to adhere to the 1940s theme, from rolled hair and faux fur stoles to zoot suits and even top hats. In this regard the actors and actresses in period costume were probably unnecessary.

The film was shown as part of the British Film Institute’s ‘Black star’ celebration of the range, versatility and power of black actors, and the BFI had made a financial contribution to facilitate the event. Obviously with a film more than 70 years old there is no shortage of critical assessment available, suffice to say that the finale produced whooping and clapping from the audience which would have been worthy of a live performance.

Following the screening just about everybody stayed for a live swing band set from The Billionaires. They ran through a wide set of 1940s standards to bring the night to an appropriate and appreciated close.
