DEPART, a spectacular show from internationally acclaimed Australian circus artists, Circa, are making Stanley Park, Blackpool their final destination in their sell-out tour on Thursday 1 to Sunday 4 June 2017.
Taking over the Park for four days, circus artists will dance above your head, surprising you with extraordinary feats of physicality and guide you through the space between life and death. DEPART will take you on a path through the vast spaces, iconic features and intimate wooded areas of Stanley Park, transforming one of Blackpool’s most beautiful public spaces into the underworld.
This mix of circus and dance is inspired by the ancient Greek legend of Orpheus and Eurydice. Led by Yaron Lifschitz, with a creative team including the electronic music legend Lapalux, DEPART brings together acrobats, aerialists, video artists and Fylde Coast community choirs and dancers for an experience like no other.
On a recent site visit to Blackpool from Australia Yaron stated; “At the heart of the experience is the attempt to grasp the ungraspable – to connect ourselves with the very limit of what makes us human. Depart is a meditation, a playground for the soul, a circus in search of otherworldliness and a hundred moments of joyous beauty.”
He went on to say; “Blackpool has such a large entertainment context and it will be really interesting to ask the audience to come and see a show in a different way than they are perhaps used to. Blackpool is proving to be the place I can make the show I always wanted to make!”
Depart has been co-commissioned by LeftCoast, London International Festival of Theatre (LIFT), the National Centre for Circus Arts, Spitalfields Music, Hull UK City of Culture 2017, and Brighton Festival. Supported by Arts Council England.
Mark Ball, Artistic Director of LIFT, said “I’m delighted that we’re now able to share Circa’s epic and emotionally-charged show with audiences across the country, bringing an array of exceptional circus artists, composers, choral arrangers and singers and dancers together to create a spine-tingling piece of work. I hope Depart stays with audiences for as long as it has stayed with me.”
The show is suitable for ages 11+ and children must be accompanied by adults. The show lasts 75 minutes, is performed outside and will involve periods of walking and standing with limited seating available at the finale.
