Fans of this classic comedy from the 1990s are in for a treat when BAFTA nominated Waiting for God hits the stage at Blackpool’s Grand Theatre next week.
Starring Jeffrey Holland (Hi De Hi, You Rang, M’Lord?, Coronation Street) as central character Tom Ballard, the show promises to delight as the characters grow old disgracefully. At Bayview Retirement Home, battle-axe extraordinaire Diana Trent conspires with new resident Tom to defeat the ghastly manager with unexpectedly heart-warming results.
The strong supporting cast includes Nichola McAuliffe (Surgical Spirit, Kiss Me, Kate, ITV’s Victoria and BBC’s Doctors). Also Joanna Bending as Sarah Chase, David Benson as Geoffrey Ballard, Peter Cadden as Dennis Sparrow, Samuel Collings as Harvey Baines and Emily Pithon as Jane Edwards as well as Corinna Marlowe and Anna Westlake.
Original series creator Michael Aitkens (also Midsomer Murders and much else) pens this all-new script while Tony Award winner David Grindley (The Heiress, Our Boys, Jeffrey Bernard is Unwell) directs.
Promising to recapture all the original series’ charm, comedy drama aficionados should look forward to this gutsy celebration of the compensations of advancing years and the experience and humour that might bring.
