Are you an aspiring playwright? An actor with ambition? A drama practitioner with a desire to use the arts to explore deeper social issues? The supercharged Electric Sunshine Project here in Blackpool is providing some outstanding courses to help local creatives develop some of these skills.

Leading artists including Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) Head of Casting, Geese Theatre Company Artistic Director and International Playwright Nick Wood will deliver workshops for Blackpool residents; all as part of new arts organisation, The Electric Sunshine Project’s (TESP) commitment to linking up local emerging artists with industry experts.

The courses are taking place in Blackpool Central Library at the end of August and are designed to help participants to take practical next steps in their chosen area of performance. Aimed at ages 16+, limited to 25 places per course, each course is a scoop at just £20 per person.

The one day playwriting course on 29 August (10am-3pm), will be run by internationally acclaimed playwright Nick Wood, whose professional experience will provide practical insights to the writing process, aimed at those who already have work they have written as well as absolute beginners.

On Wednesday 30 August (10am-1pm), RSC Head of Casting Hannah Miller gives a masterclass in casting and auditioning and the inner workings of one of the world’s most renowned theatre companies. The general workshop on how to approach the auditioning process will be followed by one to one sessions on individual audition pieces. These one to one sessions are offered to the first participants to book.

On Thursday 31 August (10.30am-3.30pm) Artistic Director of Geese Theatre Company, Andy Watson provides a unique insight into how to use theatre arts to explore deeper social issues. Geese are world-leaders in ‘applied theatre to achieve social change’ and have worked with people in prison, on probation, or in mental health settings; young offenders, and professionals who work with these client groups.

Melanie Whitehead, who formed TESP in July 2016 as a not-for-profit company offering high quality workshops, events, projects and performances, to happen primarily in Blackpool, says:

“I’m so excited to be able to offer this programme of masterclasses in this town. With such a brilliant range of people who are interested in arts, entertainment and how cultural activities can genuinely contribute to long-term social change, I hope we’ll get a really diverse group of people attending. This could lead to the start of a bigger conversation about how local creatives of all kinds can focus their artistic attentions on making work in Blackpool, rather than leaving for the bigger cities.”

‘Writing for Theatre’ takes place Tuesday 29 August, ‘Auditioning to be Cast’ on Wednesday 30 August and ‘Applied Theatre Techniques’ on Thursday 31 August, all in the Brunswick Room, Central Library, Queen Street, Blackpool, FY1 1PX. Each course costs £20pp.

There are still a couple of places available on the writing masterclass but the other two masterclasses are now booked up. So contact Melanie as soon as possible if you are interested in attending next Tuesday 29th August. Also, keep a look out for longer courses coming up in September.

To book visit the TESP website. Or for more information contact Melanie on [email protected] or call/text on 07940 502450.
