Give a little: Big Issue North gift guide

Blackpool Social Club is proud to support Big Issue North, a magazine bought and sold by the homeless and vulnerable housed vendors who choose to work, not beg. Normally Christmas shoppers would purchase a copy making the festive season their most lucrative time of year, but this year with many of them forced off the streets, you can support them without leaving the comfort of your own home. From subscriptions to the weekly and glossy quarterly magazines to handcrafted and recycled jewellery made from unsold issues, Big Issue North’s Bronte Schiltz rounds up some of the brilliant products available on their online shop

Big Issue North subscription

Buying Big Issue North from your local vendor hasn’t been as easy as usual this year. From national lockdowns, to tier three restrictions across the north, to health or age preventing both vendors and customers from getting out and about as normal, picking up a magazine has often been far from simple. With a subscription, you will never miss an issue, and all proceeds go back into supporting our vendors.

You can buy a three, six or twelve month package at https://shop.bigissuenorth.com/category/subscriptions, subscribe by direct debit at https://pay.gocardless.com/AL0003E9T4AAG1, or take out a digital subscription https://issuu.com/store/publishers/bigissuenorth/issues/bin1368full

The New Issue

The New Issue is a glossy quarterly subscription magazine by the people who produce Big Issue North, containing real stories, beautifully told. It offers stunning photography combined with high-quality independent writing, covering everything from changing landscapes and social issues, to lifestyle and fiction. It’s a long read – something to take time over and savour. Annual subscriptions cost £40, payable altogether or quarterly, or you can buy individual issues or discounted bundles containing two, three or all four existing issues. 2021 calendar

The theme of this year’s calendar is a universal one – food! Everyone has a favourite dish, and often the reasons why can go beyond just the taste; it’s about the way it makes you feel, the memories it evokes, or the destination it transports you to. Our vendors are no different, and this calendar contains recipes for 12 of our vendors’ favourite dishes, written up and crafted by Mary-Ellen McTague, chef at The Creameries in Chorlton, Manchester, and founder of Eat Well MCR. Featuring beautiful photography by Rebecca Lupton, this calendar-cum-recipe book is a perfect Christmas treat for any food-lovers in your life. Elvira and Me

Elvira and Me is a book offering an intimate and collaborative photographic exploration of the life of one young female Romanian migrant living in Manchester, which aims to subvert and challenge the common stereotypes of Roma people within photography and journalism. The book is co-produced by Ciara Leeming, a journalist and photographer whose coverage of the Roma experience has been published in Big Issue North, the Times Educational Supplement and The Guardian, and Ramona, AKA Elvira, a Roma woman who formerly worked as a Big Issue North vendor and is now an outreach worker in Longsight, Manchester. Buy a copy for just £5 at https://shop.bigissuenorth.com/category/merchandise.

Street Noise is one of the Big Issue North Trust’s fundraising avenues – live music events to raise money to support the people who sell the magazine. We also have a range of merchandise on offer, including t-shirts, a bundle including a plectrum, wristband and guitar sticker, and a 7” single of Lukas Graham’s “You’re Not The Only One (Redemption Song)”.
