I have had the pleasure of photographing Government in the past and I am more then aware that they attract a lively crowd who know how to get down and party hard. Their line up has changed since their last shows. The band’s new line up composes of Scott McMillan on drums, Mathew Cox on hammond/keys, Aaron Pounce on bass, Gary Lees on percussion/vox, Gemma Callighan on vox and Steve Brooks on guitar – and they know how to belt a tune out.
I headed down fashionably late to an extremely busy Blue Room filled with thumping bass. Government’s renditions of familiar funk and hip hop fusion create a funky jam session that never fails to get their audience dancing and Friday was no different. The atmosphere was charged and the Blue Room rammed with wall to wall people dancing shoulder to shoulder, certainly not for the faint hearted.
Government have a loyal following, no doubt harking back to their “Helicopter” days. A number of Cowbell Radio DJ’s were also in attendance and followed the lively set, keeping the party going until the early hours. A broad variety of tracks were belted out: Bowie and Prince, a bit of something for all tastes. I took to the dance floor for the few last tracks and really enjoyed strutting my funky stuff with a few old pals.
The final verdict: If you get the chance to check out Government you should go for it. An entertaining and well played band who create an ace atmosphere. Your next chance to see Government will be this Sunday at Cowbell Radio’s family friendly event, Alfresco at Blackpool Cricket Club. All those in favour, say Ai.
