Editor’s Note: Not All Doom & Gloom

Summer in Blackpool

Over the past months, Blackpool has seen a host of fantastic events take place in the creative calendar. Back in May we were treated to a gloriously sunny and hay-filled day of family fun with Alfresco presents Mr Scruff at Blackpool Cricket Club. The start of June saw urban art return to Blackpool for the ever inspiring weekend that is Sand, Sea & Spray with over 30 artists descending on the town.

But it hasn’t all been good news. On the 29 June, The Blue Room hosted its last night of live music and closed its doors, ending its reign as Blackpool’s number one live music venue. As a core part of the local music scene there is no doubt that many locals are experiencing a Blue Room shaped hole in their lives and worry for the future of live music in the town.

But it’s not all doom and gloom. In early July we welcomed Wordpool, Blackpool’s Annual Literature Festival, to its new home earlier in the year and (albeit on a smaller scale than in previous years) it didn’t fail to disappoint with a host of author visitsAunty Social’s Pop-Up Picture HouseTrevor Meaney at Blackpool Dead Good Poets and the Tiny Worlds Family Day – plus much more.

Also in July, the Winter Gardens played host to Truly Scrumptious Handmade & Vintage Fair.  Meanwhile, Emma Benyon’s Camera-less was on show at FYC Gallery and the streets of Blackpool were invaded by Serena Korda’s Beast.

During August Blackpool will enjoy a summer of creative and cultured activity with everything from Rebellion Festival and the Summer Soiree this weekend, Deltiology at FYC Gallery throughout the month, Urban Dance Project’s Charity Showcase on the 19th, Aunty Social’s Summer Programme and The Big One Five ‘0’ Fashion Fair on North Pier on the 25th – it is sure to be a bumper month and altblackpool will be on hand to guide you through it.
