Preview: The Dead Good Poetry Show

There’s not enough poetry on the radio – but all that is about to change tonight, when Fylde Coast Radio launch the first in a series of programmes called The Dead Good Poetry Show, presented by Ashley Lister – himself a member of the Dead Good Poets.

The Lancashire Dead Good Poets’ Society comprises wordsmiths from across the Fylde coast, including award winning performance poets, acclaimed story tellers, published authors, English language lecturers, creative writing tutors and professional reviewers.

They meet once a month at No 5 Cafe in Blackpool to host an open mic event, encouraging amateur writers at various levels of experience to perform their work alongside established scribes. With a common theme for everyone to tackle, each open mic evening is full of high quality and very different approaches that excite the non-performing audience members as much as the fellow poets.

Through a mix of  live recordings and audience participation, Ash hopes his programme will capture some of the atmosphere from those events. He said: “I will be talking with poets and writers, playing pieces of poetry and music, and playing recordings from the Dead Good Poets’ open mic nights at the No. 5 Cafe.

“I’m hoping to take a light-hearted approach to the subject matter. I will also be expecting a fair amount of audience participation either through the Lancashire Dead Good Poets’ FaceBook or Twitter pages – so please contribute if you have a chance.”

The show will be going out live on Saturday evenings from 8 until 10. Following the same format as the open mic nights, the first half will be family friendly, while the second half will touch on adult themes.

Ash added: “The theme each week will likely be dictated by a combination of the blog theme and the open mic theme. I’m expecting it to be a lot of fun.”

Anyone interested in listening can either click on one of the links on the Dead Good Blog pages, or they can download the Tune-in app and listen through that.
