Last Legs for Community Art

Last Legs for Community Art

Art, community and creativity are all thriving in Blackpool currently but somehow, little by little, drifting away from society and education in the UK. If we were to dig deep to discover what makes us as human beings become more fulfilled and complete, we could look to Roko Belic’s Academy Award nominated documentary, Happy, which discusses four elements that potentially hold the key to that illusive happiness. Two important elements discussed are connecting with close and supportive friends and family and community, the second being compassion and service to others. Caught up in the rat race we all begin to think that more…

Norman Jay MBE at Fylde Rugby Club

Norman Jay MBE at Fylde Rugby Club

What can I say, I am so excited about this DJ. A regular at The Big Chill and Notting Hill Carnival, its not his first time in Blackpool either. But surely this could be a legendary finale as the open air Alfresco Family Events potentially draw to close at Fylde Rugby Club. The Good Times Sound System at Notting Hill Carnival and Norman Jay's gigs are no doubt best enjoyed in those hot and charged outdoor sessions, with Notting Hill itself attracting around fifteen thousand revelers but this is an amazing opportunity to experience his skills up front and personal. Don't…

Gallery: Alfresco 2015

Gallery: Alfresco 2015

Last weekend Blackpool played host to its very own unique festival: Alfresco. An abundance of acts and music was available at a really affordable price. See if you can spot yourself in some of our favourite images from the day. Sadly, the word on the street is that this could be the last Alfresco in Blackpool so if you did not make it down that could have been your last chance to experience a family friendly, art-focused, jolly and fun-packed day in its entirety. Here is hoping and wishing for more of the same for next year and a big…

High and Dry at the Sahara

High and Dry at the Sahara

This Friday at the ever atmospheric and graffiti painted Under Bar is a musical natural high with the promise of nothing but hypnotic beats, friends and solidarity as the bar for that night is dry. That's right - no alcohol. The organisers from Jobs, Friends and Houses are the protagonists who employ individuals on abstinent recovery to refocus their lives, by gaining training and paid work in a sometimes judgemental society.  JFH are a social enterprise led by a serving police officer with the official backing of Lancashire Constabulary. No directors are paid and all profits made are re-invested back into…

Exhibition: Breakfast Included

Exhibition: Breakfast Included

I love breakfast: crumpets, eggs and bacon, toasted teacakes. All some of my favourite foods. This forthcoming exhibition is not about food though and you cannot eat it. It's all about a visual feast! Funded by Leftcoast and based at a pop-up Coronation Street Gallery (just at the side of the Winter Gardens, next to Charabanc), the name, I believe, comes from the initial idea of photographer Jack Boniface to photograph the charming hoteliers of Blackpool. The idea evolved however and now features a series of portraits of local Blackpool business owners, including some really interesting portraits of  arcade owners…

The Most Horrid of Histories at the Grand Theatre

The Most Horrid of Histories at the Grand Theatre

The Horrible Histories at the Grand are an eye-opening, gory, exciting and authentic theatrical experience for children and adults, like me. When I was a child I went to see Hiawatha and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory with my junior school and I loved it; sitting high in the gods, ogling down at actual real life actors doing their thing on the stage. I am privileged to have experienced a number of Grand Theatre productions and almost always some of my favourite's have been children or teen theatre. That's right. I am no stranger to Horrible Histories. Having previously watching…

Abingdon Studios Throw Open the Doors

Abingdon Studios Throw Open the Doors

Wondering what's going on above Abingdon Street Market? Are there unusual and interesting comings and goings as the creators and artists pass through the magical doorway to the left of the main entrance. Blackpool’s newest dedicated arts studio and project space will be opening its doors for a late night launch by artist Michael Ridge on Thursday 9 April. Knit, Loop & Grate will be the first exhibition to take place at the town centre studios and will be a chance for the public to get a first look at the newly developed project space on the second floor. Knit, Loop…

Ex-Addicts Focused on Recovery

Ex-Addicts Focused on Recovery

A pop-up exhibition of photography by recovering addicts is about to hit the streets of Blackpool. I first heard about the photographer Len Grant at LeftCoast's Golden Section. He is a photographer who has experience telling the stories of the socially excluded and vulnerable and has featured in the Guardian. Len is currently working on a project with Jobs, Friends and Houses whose aim is to sustain individuals in abstinent recovery. The majority of employees in recovery are able to train and work within building development projects with success in renovation and sales of property, creating a profitable and sustainable business. I have been really…
