Horrible Histories at The Grand Theatre

Horrible Histories at The Grand Theatre

I entered tentatively.  Would I like the theatre production? I knew I enjoyed the TV Show.  I asked myself whether it would be suitable for me, after all  I am thirty eight years old. I remembered other great shows from my youth; comical, informative and, most of all, great fun. The theatre was packed.  There were children everywhere.  It was stuffed with whippersnappers from rafter to rafter. The atmosphere was charged with the sort of excitement only children can create. I settled in for the show. On to the stage burst three lively characters, shortly joined by a more sensible female narrator. The actors' high energy…

Alice in Wonderland at The Grand Theatre

Alice in Wonderland at The Grand Theatre

As a photographer, I love to adventure down rabbit holes and wander through looking glasses.  When I was invited to preview The Grand Theatre's latest ballet production of Alice in Wonderland, I was 'curiouser and curiouser'. On Sunday 31 March for one night and in white rabbit tradition, The Grand Theatre will be exclaiming “Don’ t be late for a very important date!” as  the incredible adventures of Alice in Wonderland unfold on the stage. All the favourite characters will be present: Tweedledum and Tweedledee, The Cheshire Cat, The White Rabbit, The Mad Hatter and The Queen of Hearts to…

Review: Band Off The Wall – Live Showcase

Review: Band Off The Wall – Live Showcase

Last week I was invited to photograph a new musical venture, Band Off The Wall, based at The Music School near Oxford Square, Blackpool.  I chatted to the team to find out more: How did it come about? Well, the Showcase came about originally through an idea by Vic Mulvey, with the blessing and enthusiasm of Blackpool Music Academy (BMA) founder and Chairman John Shaw and fellow director Ray Jones. The idea was to raise awareness of the wonderful work of the Academy in helping young, old and disabled people to learn to play a musical instrument, from donations through…

Opportunity: The Found Project

Opportunity: The Found Project

The call has gone out for artists to submit their work to an exhibition with a difference.  As the Facebook page states, '...one will not have a comprehension of this gallery...the 'gallery' will manifest in a range of everyday locations'.  Her curiosity piqued, photographer Claire Griffiths interviewed Professor Ball, the mind behind The Found Project, to find out more. Claire Griffiths: Can you tell us what The Found Project is and where it came from? Professor Ball: The Found Project has been conceived as one project of many that examines the 'everyday'. This investigation is an ongoing exploration into how…

Interview: Davos T Funk

Could 2013 be unlucky for some? Not for my interviewee. If you have not heard about Davos T Funk, you must have been hiding in a cave over Christmas. This musician, by fluke, has created an online presence that went viral and is continuing to grow. I found out more about him.       Claire Griffiths: What is your background? Davos T Funk: I'm a grammar school educated, but 100% working class, lad from Blackpool. Blackpool Groups: Urban Dance Project

Blackpool Groups: Urban Dance Project

I met Michelle of Urban Dance Project earlier on in the year when I photographed Cowbell Radio's Alfresco. She was taking a cute streetdance class with some aspiring mini Bboys and Bgirls. Michelle was immediately approachable and helped set up some photographs for me with her group who were extremley photogenic - always a bonus. Following this, I asked if I could attend some of her classes to take some shots of her rehersals and dancers. I attended my first session on a Wednesday and joined a friendly class of enthusiastic movers and shakers. Musically, I totally appreciated it: Erykah…

Best of 2012: Alfresco Cowbell Carnival

Best of 2012: Alfresco Cowbell Carnival

I was lucky enough to attend both Alfresco events earlier on in the year at Blackpool Cricket Ground. Hosted by Cowbell Radio, they took place in May and September. This article is mostly concerning May's event.  Prior to that first event, the weather had been absolutely gorgeous and temperatures were souring.  Anticipation was building. As the day approached, ticket sales were peaking and the promise of an amazing line up for the adults and special entertainments geared towards the children was stoking expectations. The Cricket Ground is a great location: parking, seating, grass for children to run and play on…

Best of 2012: Sand, Sea and Spray

Best of 2012: Sand, Sea and Spray

Last summer saw the second annual Sand, Sea and Spray urban art weekend which is organised and curated by Robin Ross. The event included a vast array of talent ranging from local to (worldwide) established artists. There was no need to be an urban art enthusiast to enjoy any of the events or the work left behind for the public to enjoy all year round. As well as the live painting which took place over various locations throughout the town and school, we had a multitude of other happenings such as street dancing, live DJ’s, an artists' Questions and Answers…
