Charities month: Easterleigh Animal Sanctuary

Charities month: Easterleigh Animal Sanctuary

Easterleigh Animal Sanctuary is a tiny, local charity with no government or lottery grant funding.  All the money they receive to run the centre and look after the animals comes purely from the kindness and hard work of their supporters.  Many supporters have carried out fundraising events for them, from sponsored dog walks, to classroom (or office) cake sales, to swimming with sharks!  Unfortunately, there is no end to the costs involved in caring for and re-homing animals. Easterleigh would not be able to operate without their supporters' help. At present, Easterleigh desperately needs: loving homes for all…

Opinion: Cafe Society in Blackpool

Opinion: Cafe Society in Blackpool

So the question is does it or doesn't it? Does 'Cafe Society' have a place in Blackpool?  Is it already here? Cafe Dolce has an outside and an inside area. Which do you prefer? Is it about weather or is it about the company, the conversation or the blend. Ah the blend! Maybe you haven't even noticed the blend or should I say blandness of the voices around you as you sit and wait for your number to get that hot accessory or bowl of soup or cheesecake depending on which diet you are on at that particular time.  Or…

Back in July when we started altblackpool we were pretty confident that there was a huge range of things happening in the Blackpool creative scene that needed to be celebrated - and how right we were. We've seen everything from a weekend of punk to the opening of Blackpool's own vintage and craft…

Opinion: 18-50’s Club Anarchy

Stuart Diggle gives us his thoughts on Blackpool's annual Punk Festival, Rebellion. The funniest thing i have heard of for a while took place on the Thursday night of the Rebellion festival outside the rear entrance to the Winter Gardens. A Romanian chap was playing his out of tune guitar very poorly indeed. With a sign saying how far he had come and that he hoped donations would pay for his ticket. On hearing his racket, one more financially secure punter offered £20 to smash his guitar against a lamp post. The Romanian accepted the offer, as it was probably…

Editor’s Note: Blackpool has plenty to be happy about

Duncan Hodgson introduces altblackpool and tells us why he thinks that although Blackpool is "officially" the country's saddest town, it has plenty to be happy about. Last week we were somewhat surprised to learn that Blackpool had been named as the unhappiest place in the country in the government's new happiness index. The Mirror reported that "Despite the Pleasure Beach, the Golden Mile and kiss- me-quick hats, the party town has been named saddest place in Britain" - but actually we think that Blackpool has much more to offer than the usual tourist gimmicks which so often stereotype our town.…
