Spooky Halloween Films At The Regent

Spooky Halloween Films At The Regent

Blackpool's hidden gem retro-cinema The Regent, has a spooky halloween film programme running up to the end of October. What better way to spend a lengthening post-equinox Friday evening than watching a classic movie with like-minded people? The films shown are selected on the basis of a 'people's vote, so don't go blaming the management. And there are snacks. This follows a fine sci-fi programme that had its fair share of thrills and scares.     First up on 5th October is Hocus Pocus (1993), the plot revolving around the resurrection of three 17th century witches, almost inevitably in Salem,…

The Regent Cinema Blackpool Sci Fi Season Presents Thrills for September.

Encroaching autumn is time for The Regent Cinema Blackpool sci fi season, a wealth of classic films for those shortening days. A set of absolutely belting movies has been selected and I'm personally hoping to catch them all. Aliens follows on from Alien, one of the first flicks I saw at our resort's hidden gem picture palace, so that one's definitely a must. The special effects in some of these films was state of the art at the time and it's always interesting to see how these stand up in the age of CGI. So settle back with pop (or…

Blackpool based post-rockers Blanket showcased their short film Fragments Of A Dream at Blackpool Central Library to a packed and approving audience. Upon entering we were greeted with the chance to try some fantastic exclusive cocktails created by Gavin Wrigley of the European Bartender School. Just amazing! This was followed by some excellent vegan burgers and a chance to pace around the room taking in the exhibition of album artwork on…

New speakers boost independent cinema’s classic film programme

New speakers boost independent cinema’s classic film programme

As a regular attendee at Blackpool's incredible independent cinema, The Regent, my one criticism has been the sound quality. In the cinema's defence, my recent adoption of reading glasses probably needs to be followed by a hearing test, but nevertheless the new projector's picture quality enhancement has not  been matched  by better sound. So, it was with delight that I learnt that new speakers had been installed for the showing of Jaws back in March. This is a classic film and memory from my growing up in the '70s past. It was showing when I was about 12, was an…

Low budget creepery grabs Winter Gardens audience

Low budget creepery grabs Winter Gardens audience

Having an aversion to big budget Hollywood flummery, a little bit of The Black Gloves - low budget creepery courtesy of the Winter Gardens Film Festival - was just the ticket. As I suspect I'm thought mad for still taking black and white stills on film, the apparent return of black and white movies fills me with a somewhat self-satisfied joy. The film starts with a teaser sequence of tragedy involving a mysterious entity, which recurs throughout the narrative. From there, psychiatrist Dr Finn Whitlock seeks out similar cases before stumbling on Eliza a ballerina whose career has been shattered by chilling visions…
