Exhibition Review: Rachel Hey at HIVEArts

Exhibition Review: Rachel Hey at HIVEArts

Blackpool artist Rachel Hey has opened her first solo exhibition at HIVEArts. Pencil and Paper brings together colourful abstract collages, highly detailed pencil portraits and digitally inspired character work shaped by years of artistic experimentation. David Simper went along to the exhibition launch and caught up with the artist. I've followed Rachel's work for some time on social media and was keen to see it first hand at what is her first exhibition at the Church Street, HIVEArts gallery. On arrival the cafe area was buzzing with visitors – not just for this exhibition but with Blackpool Sixth Form's BTEC…

Exhibition Review: Darren Elwell at Tea Amantes

Exhibition Review: Darren Elwell at Tea Amantes

Fresh from reviewing at the HIVEArts event the same evening, David Simper legged it down to a crowded Tea Amantes tea room and gallery to catch Darren Elwell's latest show. Darren Elwell is a freelance illustrator and experienced teacher based in Lytham St Annes. He is inspired by the graphic and dynamic style of American comic books he adored as a teenager. With experience in packaging design, advertising, and illustration projects for a diverse range of clients, Darren has plenty of opportunities to exploit his distinctive style. Here he exhibits personal work based on his own vision. I previously reviewed…

I arrived to a buzzing venue with people enthralled by the work. These images are strong, detailed and full of interest, clearly taking a great deal of skill to execute. The mark making…

Inktober: my month of drawing

Inktober: my month of drawing

I wrote about the Inktober event in 2021 and wondered if anyone else had taken part. The seasons seem to swing round ever faster and the 2022 event was soon upon me. Did anyone else take part this time? To clarify what this is all about, the challenge is to produce an ink drawing to a given prompt for each day of October. The prompts are published quite well in advance, so there's time for a little planning. This year's personal innovation has been more colour with the use of artist's marker pens. These mean taking more time to produce…

Art review: Radek Marszalik at Tea Amantes

Art review: Radek Marszalik at Tea Amantes

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] The Tea Amantes team has brought us another fine exhibition, this time featuring the work of Polish artist, Radek Marszalik. [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="2/3"][vc_column_text]I bussed it down to Albert Road to catch the opening event. The place soon filled with Blackpool and the Fylde's creatives and friends and the evening turned into quality social time. This work is of incredible detail and clearly requires great technical skill to put it together. There is good colour use and then contrast with stark yet intricate monochrome images. Radek says: "I adore creating with oil paints, graphite, colour pencils and other mediums, which allow…

Grundy Art Gallery unveils its 110th anniversary events calendar

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] Back in 1911, local brothers and artists John and Cuthbert Grundy put their hands in their wallets and made a substantial financial gift and a donation of over 30 paintings to establish the Grundy Art Gallery for the people of Blackpool. 2021 marks the 110th Anniversary of the gallery opening its doors and this milestone will be celebrated through a programme of special exhibitions and events. During construction, Blackpool’s coat of arms, which is emblazoned with the word ‘Progress’, was embedded into the brickwork above Grundy Art Gallery’s front door. Guided by this motto, the gallery continues to honour…
