Exhibition: 20 years of Inkden tattoo studio

Our friends at the Tea Amantes tea room and art gallery are frequently featured in these pages for hosting a string of excellent art exhibitions. Now they are hosting a show to celebrate 20 years of their partner business, the Inkden Tattoo Studio. The studio first opened as the Dragons Den and was founded by Keith Butcher in the heart of Blackpool and quickly gained recognition and became one of the most renowned and respected tattoo studios in town. Over the past two decades, the studio has witnessed significant changes, one of which was the takeover by one of Keith's…

Exhibition: Grundy Open 2023

Exhibition: Grundy Open 2023

My wife and I take the service 3 to our lovely Grundy Art Gallery to view the 2023 Open Exhibition, a wealth of Blackpool and the Fylde Coast talent. I have to declare the vested interest in that I have a piece in there; unfortunately it looks a bit poor against other exhibits - it's the taking part that counts. We entered to find the place buzzing. There were several familiar faces. The exhibition features 135 wall-mounted pieces and five sculptures on the floor plinths. There is an incredible range of techniques, genres and materials on display, from traditional scenes…

Inktober: my month of drawing

Inktober: my month of drawing

I wrote about the Inktober event in 2021 and wondered if anyone else had taken part. The seasons seem to swing round ever faster and the 2022 event was soon upon me. Did anyone else take part this time? To clarify what this is all about, the challenge is to produce an ink drawing to a given prompt for each day of October. The prompts are published quite well in advance, so there's time for a little planning. This year's personal innovation has been more colour with the use of artist's marker pens. These mean taking more time to produce…

Art show review: Say it with Flowers – Laura Shevaun Green at Central Library

Art show review: Say it with Flowers – Laura Shevaun Green at Central Library

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Thursday saw me at the Central Library for a lovely evening viewing Laura Shevaun Green's solo exhibition - Say it with Flowers. Set on the library's gallery wall, the pieces looked particularly striking. The space is light and airy, in what is an iconic local building. Consisting of semi-abstract, mainly floral paintings, overlain with text, these pieces have a powerful impact.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_masonry_media_grid grid_id="vc_gid:1659191761119-9642cc91-45b5-4" include="35563,35558,35564"][/vc_column][/vc_row] Of her work Laura says: Back in the 19th century, Victorians used to present one another with gifts of flowers to deliver messages. These messages were often so secretive or unconventional that they couldn't possibly be…

Story Trails Made us See Blackpool Differently

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] When you visit Central Library in Blackpool you expect to step into different worlds through the medium of books. Last weekend it was more ‘if you go into the library today, you’re sure of a big surprise!’ as audiences entered the worlds of Virtual Reality (VR) and interactive Augmented Reality (AR). Story Trails is the UK’s largest immersive storytelling project and brings together the past, present and future using the latest technology. Through immersive cinema experience, 3D maps of Blackpool or a VR headset bringing to life BFI & BBC archives, there was much to choose from. Throughout the…

Garth takes the fight to London exhibition

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] Blackpool based artist Garth Gratrix has been invited to join artist and curator Cecilia Sjoholm in an upcoming London exhibition that brings together seven contemporary artists who all engage in defiance. THE COMRADES THEY WERE BRAVE runs at 44 GRS Gallery in Bloomsbury from 18 March until 10 April 2022. Conceived as an homage to Edith Garrud (1872- 1971), Jiujitsu martial arts teacher to the suffragettes, it explores the theme of fighting for a cause. In 1909, in response to increasing physical abuse by the police and opponents to their campaign for women’s right to vote, Edith Garrud began…

‘We’re Sew Done’ calls for help to get book done

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] Back in September community arts organisation, Aunty Social opened the We're Sew Done exhibition at Blackpool Central Library highlighting street harassment and violence against women. [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/3"][vc_single_image image="34506" img_size="medium" alignment="center"][/vc_column][vc_column width="2/3"][vc_column_text]The project was a response to the disappearance and murder of Sarah Everard and the subsequent movement to 'Reclaim the Streets'. Blackpool Social Club contributor Antonia Charlesworth wrote an article calling out to local women to share their experiences of street harassment on the Fylde Coast. It was this information provided the inspiration for Aunty Social's textile group, Knittaz with Attitude, to create pieces for the exhibition. We're Sew…

Shifting Sands: Artist Nicky Thompson revives the classic railway poster

[vc_row][vc_column width="2/3"][vc_column_text] North West-based artist Nicky Thompson has unveiled a new poster series in the style of the striking railway posters designed and issued in the 1920s and '30s. With influences from Art Deco to Art Nouveau, these eye-catching posters will be exhibited at the lovely Lytham Hall between 4 February 2022 and 30 September 2022. A selection of original heritage railway posters will also be shown alongside them. My previous articles have often mentioned the railway industry as promoting top design work and these posters are another prime example of this. These pieces are real artistic survivors and I…
