Exhibition Review: Northern Exposures

Exhibition Review: Northern Exposures

David Simper bussed it down to the Tea Amantes cafe and gallery to catch this excellent show of contemporary street photography in the North West. The Tea Amantes gallery is always conducive to an attractive and intimate show such as this, together with excellent snacks. On arrival a good crowd was already there creating a homely buzz of conversation. I noticed a good number of excellent photographers in the throng, and then there was me but I hardly count. Street photography has always fascinated me and I've never really had the nerve to pursue it properly. Nowadays a lot of people…

Exhibition Review: photography from That Alternative Studio

Exhibition Review: photography from That Alternative Studio

An exhibition of photography has been curated jointly between That Alternative Studio and HIVEArts. His own camera in hand, David Simper nipped down to the Church Street venue to view the work on display. The exhibition varied from the usual HIVEArts fare in that I  required a VIP ticket, which was checked on the door or rather the top of the stairs. On entering, the gallery space was more crowded than I'd ever seen and there was quite the buzz. I could see familiar and new faces. This was a joint venture betwen HIVEArts and That Alternative Studio where the…

Exhibition Review: Celebrating Blackpool’s LGBTQ+ history

Exhibition Review: Celebrating Blackpool’s LGBTQ+ history

As part of Blackpool's Winter Pride Rainbow Weekend, HIVEArts delivered a decade-spanning exhibition of photographs and memorabilia celebrating the town's LGBTQIA+ culture. David Simper nipped down to the Church Street gallery to catch the display. Entering the HIVEArts gallery through an arch of appropriately brightly coloured balloons, the walls were covered in photographs of people, usually in a social or performance situation. These were complemented by memorabilia – mainly posters for evenings featuring local artists and national stars, including Mark Almond and Toyah Wilcox. It's all smiles from the photos' subjects – I can imagine people spending a long time…

Exhibition review: Blackpool – the main resort – Stan Crook

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] The first Monday of the month comes around and this time I catch the service 6 bus to view Stan Crook's photographic exhibition at the Tea Amantes gallery and tea room. This is an exercise in love for our resort, expertly captured in colour and black and white digital photographs.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/3"][vc_single_image image="39809" img_size="medium" alignment="center"][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/3"][vc_single_image image="39810" img_size="medium" alignment="center"][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/3"][vc_single_image image="39805" img_size="medium" alignment="center"][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Plain frames contain both single and individual images, mostly taken on the sea front at various stages of the year and in various lights. Thus the mood can switch dramatically. The exhibition opening coincided with the start of…

Exhibition Review: Bloomin ‘eck! by Amanda Aiton

Exhibition Review: Bloomin ‘eck! by Amanda Aiton

Thursday 6th July 2023 and once more I finished work and made the 18:08 bus down to The Hive for Amanda Aiton's excellent digital photography exhibition. Afterwards we had a quick chat about using film, a whole new world of photography for her. Mostly of the natural world and creatures around Blackpool, these pictures are beautifully composed and framed. Where black and white has been employed, the contrast is spot on; where colour, the images are vibrant. The images have a distinct otherworldly quality. These would grace any wall. People were browsing, loving and purchasing these photographs, shot under Amanda's…
