Deal Or No Deal is very much in the ‘marmite’ mould, you either love it or hate it and there were predictably mixed reactions when it was announced the current series is to be the last on Channel 4. TV programmes can of course make a comeback, often many years later as the sixteen-year sojourn of Doctor Who showed. But for now DOND is bowing out with a series of shows in iconic venues, and today one of those is being filmed in Blackpool’s very own Tower Ballroom.
For those unfamiliar with it DOND is a game show format imported from The Netherlands where a contestant has to decide when to reach a deal with the banker, or indeed not to do so at all. It is possible for the contestant to be on course for a large payout, only for things to go dramatically awry. In an eleven-year run of 3000 epsiodes eight contestants have secure the maximum £250,000 payout.
Throughout its UK incarnation the host of DOND has been Noel Edmonds. Like the programme Noel is someone who can strongly divide opinions, perhaps not surprisingly as he was responsible for inflicting Mr Blobby on an unsuspecting world. He has however been successful in radio and television as a presenter and executive for approaching fifty years now. He is working with Channel 4 on potential new projects including commissioned game show ‘Sell Or Swap’ and pilot ‘Cheap Cheap Cheap’.
Other special episodes in this finale run include underground at Wookey Hole, on board the Flying Scotsman train and notably on a Boeing 737 at 37,000 feet over the skies of Britain. The ten-episode run will be broadcast in December as ‘Deal Or No Deal On Tour’. There will be Christmas themed elements in some of the recordings, in line with the programme’s tradition of occasional dressing up, stay tuned to see if the Blackpool episode has Noel indulging in Noel.
