The Shawshank Redemption is modern classic of cinema, it jumped on to the screen from the pages of Stephen King’s novella collection Different Season and now the film version which is sited as the greatest ever made has jumped to the stage.
The Winter Gardens will be showing the highly acclaimed stage version next week and if the adaptation does the story half justice it is going to be an incredible night of theatre.
If you have been living under a rock or indeed locked away as the protagonists of the play have been and not sure of the plot here it is in a nutshell. Mild mannered account Andy Dufresne given life sentences for the murder of his wife and daughter and sent to the brutal Shawshank prison, to survive this man made hell hole he starts up a friendship with Red a prisoner who can get you anything you want but freedom. The pair strive to make the world of the prison tolerable for themselves but trouble looms when the crooked warden concocts a plan to exploit them, the pair plan an escape but the clock is ticking…
It’s a story of humans in extreme conditions of horror but not without the glimmer of hope, can the pair find the titled redemption? You’ll have to get your ticket and find out next week at The Winter Gardens… The Shawshank Redemption opens tonight and runs until 19 November.
