My favourite thing about Ride The Lights is the noise – or rather, the lack of it. As someone who frequently cycles through the busy Starr Gate area at rush hour, there is something magical about the eerie quiet – save for the gentle tinkling of bells and spinning of pedals – that descends for the evening.
The two-wheeled takeover, rechristened Let’s Ride the Lights this year, returns on Tuesday 28 August. Traffic is stopped along the Promenade all the way to Bispham as cyclists enjoy an early preview of the Illuminations before the official Switch-On, as well as music and entertainment on the Tower Festival Headland.
In previous years, riders have competed with extravagant decorations to light up their bikes. A number of unorthodox vehicles have also been spotted, with repurposed go-karts a particular favourite.
A highlight of the ride for many is a diversion through Blackpool Pleasure Beach, which opens for the night to allow riders to cycle through the park, where they are greeted with live music and costume characters – all for free.
Whether you’re a beginner pedaler or an Olympic hopeful – whether you’re riding a tricycle or an adapted wheelbarrow – this promises to be a mesmerising evening, and by far the best way to see the lights.
Ride The Lights is on the 28th August – find out full info here https://www.visitblackpool.com/detail/ride-the-lights-675180/
