‘Hayley & Me’ to explore trans topics

‘Hayley & Me’ to explore trans topics

Although I'm not LGB or T I have many friends and members of my family who are part of the LGBT community. A couple of years ago my interest was piqued by an exhibition in Blackpool, entitled, "We're Here...", curated by Garth Gratrix. I was particularly moved by part of that exhibition, The Pansy Project,' by Paul Harfleet. I suppose I've always felt empathy for any minority group which has to fight for equality. In the course of the following months I met and spoke to many LGBT people as part of a project and subsequent exhibition, 'Inside Out', that I produced with fellow…

Grundy goes photographic ‘On the Beach’

Grundy goes photographic ‘On the Beach’

A significant exhibition of newly discovered images by social documentary photographer Shirley Baker is set to open at the Grundy on Saturday 20 May. The exhibition takes us 'on the beach' at Blackpool and on the Côte d'Azur. I must admit, when I read the initial description of this exhibition I was instantly intrigued. This was in part due to my interest as a fellow photographer but more importantly as a photographer who has recently completed a road trip around the seaside towns of Great Britain, recording images out of season and comparing them to the hundreds of Blackpool images I already have.…

How To Starve an Artist – The Film

How To Starve an Artist – The Film

A few months ago I was asked to shoot a local poetry session, at which, I was told, the renowned Canadian poet, Rose Condo would be performing.  I've always loved poetry so, although I wasn't familiar with Rose at that point, I was happy to record the event. When Rose took the floor I was instantly mesmerised.  Not only was she charismatic but the performance had a combination of warmth, intimacy and humour, the like of which I hadn't seen before.  As Rose started to slice baguettes, spreading them with butter and hummus, and handing them round to the audience she began performing…

An Alternative Shopping Experience

An Alternative Shopping Experience

Never one to pass up a shopping expedition, particularly one that involves work produced by local artists and craftspeople, I was excited to hear about an evening of retail therapy entitled 'Make It Christmas' at several local outlets, planned for 1 December 2016. As a member of the Blott Artist Collective, one of the participating organisations, I was even more thrilled to realise that I would be involved not only in the buying but also in the selling. I spoke to Corrine Streetly, artist director and curator of Blott, about how Blott was first established. She told me the studio…

Canine Creations Abound With LumiDogs

LeftCoast launched LumiDogs back in 2014 billing it as 'barking but brilliant' and this year its back for LightPool Festival 2016. Top pictures requested for Mayor’s Christmas card

Fylde coast photographers could make their precious snaps become the image of Blackpool this year. Mayor of Blackpool Kath Rowson is encouraging residents to send in their best photos of the resort as part of a competition to be on the front of the annual civic Christmas card. The Mayor’s Christmas card is sent out as a festive greeting from Blackpool to dignitaries, business leaders and community leaders throughout the town, as well as being sent to twin town Bottrop, as well as Her Majesty the Queen and the Prime Minister.  Normally the pictures for the Christmas card are taken from…
