As a contributing writer to the collection, she tells Blackpool Social Club readers how work from local writers manifested into a new publication It was a packed house at Tea Amantes Community Arts on Albert Road in Blackpool, as many of the 37 Blackpool-based-or-connected writers, and friends, piled into to celebrate the culmination of nearly a year’s work, the publication of the anthology Seaside Shuffle - an eclectic mix of writing styles, and points of view all summoning…

Performing Poetry Workshop Participant’s Blog – The Old Electric

Margaret Benson recently attended the Performing Poetry Skills sessions arranged by The Old Electric and wrote this blog about her experiences, which she has entitled, I found a leaflet and changed my life .... All my life I’ve been writing, poems, short stories, plays and even thirty thousand words of a novel and cruelly abandoned the main protagonist going round and round a roundabout trying to decide which way to go. She’s still there, just as almost everything I’ve ever written is stuffed in a drawer, or stored on a memory stick; there are even a couple of floppy discs…

Poetry Performance Workshops with The Old Electric

Poetry Performance Workshops with The Old Electric

In the lead up to her upcoming workshops, local performer Liz Wilkinson shares her thoughts with us about performing poetry and how this can differ from character work in plays or singing, via her blog:- Speak the speech... trippingly on the tongue Reading your poetry aloud before an audience is terrifying. Poetry is unique in its ability to show the vulnerability of the author. In an art form where every line matters there is no space for spare words, no flannel, no obfuscation. Every single word signals your emotions and when you are brave enough to stand alone and share…

Famous faces of stage and screen record all 154 of Shakespeare’s sonnets to raise money for dementia charity.

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] When local actor Thomas Michaelson’s father was diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia he found, first-hand, how difficult caring for someone with dementia can be, especially without support in the home. [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] Now he’s raising money for Dementia UK, a charity who provide Admiral nurses to help those caring for their loved ones, by bringing together a host of actors and performers to record audio versions of all 154 of Shakespeare’s famous sonnets. [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] As the population grows, more and more people are sadly having to deal with a loved one developing some form of dementia, whether it’s an elderly…

Review-Linda Hampton Into the Light – an exhibition by Kate Eggleston- Wirtz at Urban Arts Studio My regular monthly visit to the Urban Arts Studio this weekend, for the launch of the latest exhibition of a local artist’s work, was a joyous evening as always. How To Starve an Artist – The Film

How To Starve an Artist – The Film

A few months ago I was asked to shoot a local poetry session, at which, I was told, the renowned Canadian poet, Rose Condo would be performing.  I've always loved poetry so, although I wasn't familiar with Rose at that point, I was happy to record the event. When Rose took the floor I was instantly mesmerised.  Not only was she charismatic but the performance had a combination of warmth, intimacy and humour, the like of which I hadn't seen before.  As Rose started to slice baguettes, spreading them with butter and hummus, and handing them round to the audience she began performing…
