Plenty of Heart and Soul on the Comedy Carpet

Plenty of Heart and Soul on the Comedy Carpet

Last weekend saw a great event in Blackpool for Northern Soul and for Cancer Research. The Comedy Carpet was invaded by Soul dancers of every age and ability, as they attempted to beat a world record in aid of Cancer Research. Fifteen hundred devotees filled the Carpet, and danced their hearts out to two tracks in order to beat the record of most soul dancers, dancing in an outside event at one time. The pictures in the gallery are testament to the enjoyment of all who participated. Next year's charity event is already being planned. Images courtesy of Jill Reidy…

Getting Creative

Getting Creative

The Winter Gardens Creatives Fair last weekend was a first for organiser, Robin Ross, and his right hand man, Ben Swift. Judging by the sales and compliments from customers, it certainly won't be the last. Business was steady at first, but picked up as the rain fell relentlessly outside and visitors sought refuge inside the building. There could not have been a greater variety of goods on show. Huge, fruity scones and cakes oozing cream were the first hurdle for those not wanting to spoil their lunch. Vintage coats and jewellery jostled for space with carefully carved wooden toys, tiny…

Take Ten

Take Ten

The Solaris Centre in South Shore, Blackpool, is a popular drop in point for winter prom walkers in need of a hot drink or a tasty snack. Whilst they thaw out, what many of these customers don't realise is that there are two long corridors branching off from either side of the cafe, housing a rolling programme of art displays which are well worth a look. 'Take Ten' is a collective exhibition by ten local artists and is a diverse mix of screen prints, drawings and photography. The group came together by chance when Two Old Birds with Cameras (Dawn…

Delights – Just What It Says On The Tin

Delights – Just What It Says On The Tin

Kelly Ellison of Cake-Tin Delights greeted me with a big smile as I entered her shop on Topping Street.  The building has a clean, fresh look, with a large blackboard welcoming customers in, and hand-painted table and chairs ("found in my mother-in-law's loft") with bright gingham cloths. Expertly iced dummy cakes sit proudly on shelves and in the window while old fashioned scales and cake stands are displayed alongside ingredients and pastel coloured decorations can be seen peeping from neatly labelled boxes and tubs. A huge counter in the centre of the shop is where the bulk of the work…

HMV Blackpool Christmas Party 2014 @ Top Of The Tower

HMV Blackpool Christmas Party 2014 @ Top Of The Tower

Photographing a gig at the top of The Tower on one of the coldest, windiest nights of the year was not sounding too appealing as we were led by a succession of well insulated security folk through a maze of passages and into the lift which would take us up to our venue. At first glance, the area itself was hardly inspiring, but then I'm probably not the best qualified to judge whether a space is right for two young aspiring bands, who have been given the honour of playing at the top of Britain's most famous tower. This certainly…

Happy Days

Happy Days

Entering the Kingfisher Care Home in Cleveleys is a bit like being cocooned in a warm blanket. I’ve been in several such places over the years, visiting elderly friends and relatives, but this was a real home from home. Installed in the hallway between lounges, waiting to take photographs, I watched as friendly staff moved around, chatting to residents and ensuring they were comfortable. All was very calm and peaceful. I was there to meet Lindsay Wylie, the owner, and Gillian Hesketh, owner and director of Happy Days Publishing. Part of Gillian’s business is to supply various packs for dementia…

A New Face at Blott

A New Face at Blott

There has been a big change at Blott Artist Studio in the last few weeks. Laura Havenhand, central to the running of the studio and a good friend to all members and fellow artists for the past four years, has recently left to pursue her art career in Leeds. She will be much missed at Blott, and told me she had initially been very upset at the prospect; that she felt it was the end of a chapter. However, she assured me that she would keep in touch and would always be grateful to Corrine, artist and gallery owner, at…

Gallery: Flossie at Blackpool Music Festival

To round off her time at this year's Blackpool Music Festival, Jill took her camera down to the Galleon Bar on Sunday where Flossie was bringing her blend of acoustic/alternative sound to the crowds.  For those who couldn't be there, here is what she sounds like:   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_4nT3p7WgZI And here is what Jill caught on her camera on Sunday: Images by Jilly Reidy of Two Old Birds Photography
