Kosmic Kitty Burlesque

Kosmic Kitty Burlesque

Hot enough for you? It's about to be a few degrees hotter at West Coast Rock Cafe this Saturday. And what better way to salute Independence Day than by basking in the glow of one of the best independent theatrical events in town. Kosmic Kitty's burlesque nights are always packed out. That's because Kosmic Kitty goes out of her way to procure the best and most entertaining acts from across the national scene. Blending humour, drama, dance and oodles of charm, this is risqué theatre doing what it does best - surprising audiences and daring to be different. This time…

Review: Foundation Art Exhibition at BFC

Review: Foundation Art Exhibition at BFC

The Art Foundation exhibition at Blackpool and Fylde College was displayed in a group of classrooms, down a staircase and a corridor or two, in the old building on Palatine Road. That said, there was plenty of bustle as bodies busied from room to room, families and friends ably guided around by the exhibitors. There was plenty of variety in the work on offer and my eyes were full after an hour of malingering; my head filled with the visual expressions of eager minds. I am ably assisted in this review by my partner David Nickson. He was good enough…

Student Exhibitions at BFC

Student Exhibitions at BFC

It's the time of year when students, having slaved for months, can finally stand back and present the fruits of their labour. The art courses at Blackpool & Fylde College have always had an outstanding reputation for superlative tuition and the encouragement of practical skills which enable its students to stand out. The student exhibitions are always worth a look; an image of a small sobbing bird from an exhibition seven or eight years ago stays with me as firmly as anything I have seen in the mainstream or fringe galleries since. Artist Mark Hetherington has just completed a course…

Bookish Delights

Bookish Delights

The first feature I noticed about the 2015 Wordpool festival was the consideration shown to those of us who like to combine snacks and words. Of the twelve main events only one is food free, and with good reason; following the Fylde Coast Youth Dance Company around Central Library with a handful of cake is a recipe (you’re welcome) for drama, not to mention extra work for our beloved librarians. At the deep end of the word/food pool is the discussion of Elizabeth Fremantle’s historical novel Watch the Lady, via the Twitter book club (@BpoolLibraries, #bookpool). Food isn’t actually provided…

£1,000 in 1,000 Hours

£1,000 in 1,000 Hours

Sand, Sea & Spray is happening from 10 to 12 July and the preparations are well under way. With the majority of funding already secured to bring this spectacle of urban art back to our streets, the team are asking for a final push from their supporters. They need an extra £1,000 to cover the costs of equipment hire: ladders, cherry pickers and scaffolding. You can donate via the crowd-funding site and there are some unique goodies on offer in return for donations. The plan is to raise £1,000 in 1,000 hours. If you can't afford to give but are keen…

Modern History vol. 1 at The Grundy

Modern History vol. 1 at The Grundy

Guest post by Grundy Curator Richard Parry Modern History, vol. 1 is a group exhibition, guest curated by internationally respected curator Lynda Morris. The exhibition features new commissions and existing works by leading national and international contemporary artists based in the north west and gives opportunities to younger artists to exhibit alongside more established names. While not definitive in its survey of contemporary art in the north west right now, it does present a microcosm of certain dialogues occurring in the region at the moment, articulating how these are intertwined with the world today and its pressure points. By taking…

Interview: Laura Shevaun Green

Who are you? I am a Fine Artist who goes by the name LadySkull. Some people call me Laura which is, sadly, less exciting. What do you do? The best way to describe what I do is to say I make artwork that falls into the gothic genre. I have a homeware business called SkullPunkery that is best known for its decorative skulls but is now growing to include other products. My work for SkullPunkery has a heavy dose of humour whereas the other installation-based work I create outside of this explores much darker themes. Where do you work? Currently…

Flying without Wings

Flying without Wings

When I tell you that I was on the edge of my seat for the Circolombia performance at the Showzam! Carnival Ball, I mean I was perched, hand on mouth and unable to contain the loud (occasionally expletive) excalamations that arose when these guys stunned the room.  The audience bopped to the live musical performances, which were bold and upbeat, and the athletes (for they are most definitely that) swayed and danced their way through stupendous feats with broad smiles and such casual postures that when their eyes were level with our own (my partner and I were sitting on…

Best of 2014: Alfresco

Best of 2014: Alfresco

Now firmly a part of the kick off to summer in Blackpool, Alfresco was strutting its stuff to jubilant crowds at Blackpool Cricket Club again in May.  Kirsty Jennings was there to soak up the atmosphere and Jill Reidy caught a weekend of family entertainment on camera.  Enjoy a little ray of sunshine this Christmas Eve!
