Culture Blackpool Launch – The B Side

Culture Blackpool Launch – The B Side

My hometown, Blackpool. I am here by accident really, my family moved here in the 70's to open a guest house, Blackpool was thriving then with carnivals and hoards of visitors promenading the seafront. It is still a busy hub of activity in high season but out of season, the town belongs to the locals. If you walk around the town on a blustery winters day, the atmosphere you catch is tangible, remnants of people, place and time. The town belongs again to its residents. I studied elsewhere for a Fine Arts Degree and could not wait to leave at…

Opinion – Gull Appreciation Weekend 12th-13th August

Opinion – Gull Appreciation Weekend 12th-13th August

We don't do too many opinion pieces on altBlackpool these days, but here is one on Blackpool's seagulls.  So why 'Gull Appreciation Weekend'?  Well when the altBlackpool editor asked round the contributors for airshow pictures I made a jokey comment about it being the only weekend people valued the presence of gulls on the Promenade.  'Seagull overtaking Red Arrows' or similar is fast becoming the photographic cliche of our annual sky based event, I saw at least five on Facebook today. I do find it ironic that we claim to be a nation of animal lovers, but treat any wildlife that…

Save The Blue Room

Save The Blue Room

It was simply awful to see the doors of The Blue Room close. I feel bad. I had stopped going long before then, but I still wanted it for Christmas festivities and birthdays. But there is hope! A group of Blackpool residents set about finding out how to open those dusty doors once more and with added benefits. I caught up with them to find out what it is all about. - What is your history with the Blue Room? There are five of us in the steering group at present. Gareth Wright, Rob Hill and Dave Moore are just…

E-BOOK VS ACTUAL BOOK: the ongoing debate

E-BOOK VS ACTUAL BOOK: the ongoing debate

When was the last time you took a walk around a bookshop?  Revelled in the peace that only comes from rooms insulated by reams of novels?  Felt the wonder of words wresting to burst out of their pages and lodge themselves in your brain.  As I listened to the debate rage on, thanks to having a bundle of reading family and friends all with a variety of thoughts on the matter, it seemed time to point score the different mediums.  This is by no means comprehensive and it was done in a haphazard, non-scientific way, whilst drinking snowballs! READABILITY The…

Editor’s Note: I Love Blackpool

So last week we heard from Jeremy Clarkson and Coleen Nolan on the downsides of Blackpool. From Clarkson I'd expect this, he is hardly renowned for his tact and diplomacy, even though he was perfectly happy to switch on the world famous Blackpool Illuminations back in 2008 - presumably he received a large cheque? Nolan on the other hand is a sandgrown'un, and I'd have liked to think that she would be using her celebrity status to back Blackpool. She hasn't  lived in Blackpool since 2007 which I suppose means she can more easily find fault as opposed to be being an advocate for…

Lindy Hop at West Coast

Lindy Hop at West Coast

Are you looking for an amazing new hobby? One which is fun, healthy and won't cost the earth? Well your search might just be over, thanks to Keith McGee and his brilliant Lindy Hop courses at West Coast Rock Café. I went along with Richard Oughton, one of altBlackpool's wonderful photographers, to check it out. For the uninitiated, Lindy Hop is an old style of street dance which originated in Harlem in the early 1920s and is a fusion of jazz, tap, breakaway and the Charleston, generally performed to swing music. It's a particularly creative and joyous form of dance,…

The Model Citizen

The Model Citizen

What does the naked human body mean to you? Generally, the naked form is perceived as a purely sexual tool, its appearance an object of lust or humiliation. The majority of nudity we see in the media these days is just this. Take Page 3 for instance, or Kim Kardashian breaking the internet with her big ass. Then there's the reaction to breast feeding in public, people sharing beautiful pictures of babies on the breast being reported as obscene to the Facebook police. The Greeks portrayed their male heroes, Gods and Olympic champions in nude form, perhaps as a symbol…

Where are Baseline?

Where are Baseline?

The Baseline studio is set in a bijou shop at the rear of M&S on the edge of the Houndshill Shopping Experience.  Oops! Rewind... Where have they gone? Baseline established themselves as a place where the great washed and unwashed could experience contemporary Urban Art first hand. Initially set up as a creative place to develop workshops in graphic design and general creativity a few years ago, Baseline started to become the home of developing Blackpool talents; Lowdown, Catch22 and Infected by Design, three artists battling hypothermia and the constant questions from a steady stream of visiting inquisitive public.  Questions such as:…

Best of 2014: Alfresco

Best of 2014: Alfresco

Now firmly a part of the kick off to summer in Blackpool, Alfresco was strutting its stuff to jubilant crowds at Blackpool Cricket Club again in May.  Kirsty Jennings was there to soak up the atmosphere and Jill Reidy caught a weekend of family entertainment on camera.  Enjoy a little ray of sunshine this Christmas Eve!
