Best of 2014: Rebellion

Best of 2014: Rebellion

If there is one thing Jill and Dawn (aka Two Old Birds with Cameras) love, it's the chance to get snapping on the streets and catching people in their native grace. Rebellion never fails to deliver a plethora of photographic opportunities and in August 2014 they went into full action mode to bring a sense of one of the biggest punk events in the UK calendar to altBlackpool readers. There were so many images we had to split them across two galleries! We hope you enjoy this feast of tartan, studs and ginormous mohicans.

Best of 2014: As the World Tipped

Best of 2014: As the World Tipped

Yesterday, we kicked off a fortnight of retrospectives with a look at the Cannock Chase Organ Club's restoration of the Wurlitzer at the Blackpool Opera House.   Today we are remembering the spectacle that was As the World Tipped; a remarkable piece of aerial theatre with a strong environmental theme at Blackpool Cricket Club. Kirsty Jennings joined the crowds to review this free event, brought to town by LeftCoast, and Jill Reidy caught the action with her camera. Click the photo for the full review and gallery.

Best of 2014: Pulling Out the Stops

Best of 2014: Pulling Out the Stops

As 2014 draws to a close, the altBlackpool team have been reminiscing about a year of cultural happenings on the Fylde Coast.  It's been a packed calendar this time round.  We've had a couple of big draw, international stage events from LeftCoast (Blam! and As the World Tipped), comedy with the re-launch of the North West Comedy Collective and John Hegley at the Catholic Club and a variety of circus-style entertainment at another marvellous Showzam! There have been all sort of creative workshops at the libraries and community centres and Fleetwood Tram Sunday was a riot of performance this time…

The Dapper Side: Poppy Art

The Dapper Side: Poppy Art

During the last few weeks, through the nation's media, we have witnessed the most amazing public engagement with an artwork that this country has ever experienced. The artwork is Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red by designer Tom Piper, in collaboration with ceramic artist Paul Cummins. The artwork sees 888,246 individual ceramic crafted poppies (each representing the lives of lost Allied troops in World War One) placed in the moat of The Tower of London to create a moving and thought-provoking installation. The installation has seen an incredible response, with the public flocking from far and wide to London…

The Dapper Side – Lights, Camera, Action

The Dapper Side – Lights, Camera, Action

Ever since the 1960s heydays of Blackpool's Big Night Out the town has been a Mecca for the entertainment industry which has flocked here to film. And it's not only live performance shows such as the Big Night Out brand, The Royal Variety Show and Strictly Come Dancing that the television industry bods seem to enjoy capturing in Blackpool. Our unique and vibrant town has inspired directors and producers alike into thinking that Blackpool is the perfect setting for their scripts. In 2004 we saw the often dark but very bizarre musical drama Blackpool, starring David Tennant and David Morrissey,…

Dapper Side – Public Art vs The Morons

Dapper Side – Public Art vs The Morons

In recent weeks we have heard the news of the attempted theft of a sculpture of Eric Morecambe from the sea front in Morecambe.  The thieves didn't get as far as pinching the statue as it was found near by, but they did cause considerable damage, with the only remaining piece on the plinth being a solo foot.  This kind of public art theft and mindless vandalism, sadly, isn't something new and even more sadly, it's something we have experienced in Blackpool numerous times. The targeting of public art for profit first hit my radar a few years ago when…

Dapper Side – A Sleeping Giant is Awakening

Dapper Side – A Sleeping Giant is Awakening

There was some brilliant news in last week's local press, namely that the Winter Gardens welcomed one million paying visitors from the year June 2013 to 2014.  The figure is set to rise by the end of the year, and has seen visitors up twenty five percent on the previous year's figures. This is great news for locals and fans of the Winter Gardens alike, and proves the dear old lady is moving in the right direction. Described in the past as having "little purpose in the modern day world," you have to give credit where credit is due to…

The Dapper Side – Drawing on the decline?

The Dapper Side – Drawing on the decline?

This month sees the charity Campaign For Drawing launch its annual drawing festival: The Big Draw, a focused month to encourage the nation to draw more, with events taking place up and down the country. With the rise of digital technology drawing has been on the decline for the last decade. In February 2012 we saw a six month surge in people drawing, sadly it was using a smart phone app called Draw Something which was a hybrid version of Pictionary. As the app lost its appeal, some moved on to more advanced design apps whilst others gave up the drawing…

The Dapper Side – World Mental Health Day

The Dapper Side – World Mental Health Day

Today is World Mental Health Day and this year's theme is'living with Schizophrenia.  The day is about highlighting awareness while creating understanding of mental health. There have often been strong links between creativity and mental illness.  In the world of art, the mention of mental health makes us think of the tragic tales of Vincent Van Gogh with his possible schizophrenia/bipolar outbursts, Salvador Dali's anxiety driven by doubt around sexual inadequates, or Edvard Munch with his 'Scream' which could be compared to his own breakdown and psychiatric therapy. In my years of study, I came across fellow art students who…

The Dapper Side – The Art of the Illuminations

The Dapper Side – The Art of the Illuminations

Some will say that the Illuminations are the greatest free light show in world. I would go one stage further to add that they are the most diverse illuminated sculptures on the planet. Often mocked just as much as they are loved, this six mile stretch of shimmering lights is just as iconic to Blackpool as our beloved Tower. And with a rich history embedded in design it has been nice in recent years for 'The Lights' to move into other realms of art. Love him or loath him there is no denying that having Laurence Llewelyn Bowen involved in…
