In Her Place: open water swimming

In Her Place: open water swimming

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]In this instalment of In Her Place, Stephanie Cottle gets her feet wet trying open water swimming – an activity whose up take surged following the closing of swimming pools earlier this year. Sitting with the warm evening sun on my face, I stretch my toes out across the soft, crisp sand and dig my feet deeper into the ground, rooting myself to the beach. It helps with the butterflies, this sense of anchoring. I have a strong urge to keep my feet on the shore. With a dismissive shake of my head I slip off my hoody and stuff…

Ride The Lights Tonight

Ride The Lights Tonight

After a mixed Bank Holiday weekend of weather locally the good news is that the forecast is set fair for tonight with sunny spells and light winds. So get down to the Prom for Ride The Lights, now a Blackpool institution and one of the most popular participation exercise events in the Fylde calendar. The promenade will be completely traffic-free from 7pm to welcome thousands of cyclists who get a special sneak peak of the Blackpool Illuminations before the official Switch-On. This year sees the addition of British Cycling this year, with information and entertainment for cyclists to watch and participate…

Fleetwood Parkrun Off To Flying Start

Fleetwood Parkrun Off To Flying Start

Last year we promoted the new parkrun in Blackpool's Stanley Park.  That event is now well over a year old, and firmly established.  This weekend saw the start of the Fylde's third* parkrun - Fleetwood Promenade. If you aren't familiar with parkrun it is a weekly free 5k run open to the whole community. Anybody who can walk the distance can take part, there is no requirement for running ability.  The events are staffed entirely by volunteers who give up an hour or so of their Saturday morning. There is no requirement for parkruns to be in parks - one…

Cybele Velo – A New Cycling Space In Layton

Cybele Velo – A New Cycling Space In Layton

Recently AltBlackpool's editorial team met, and wanting to avoid the town centre we went to the new Cybele Velo facility on Coleridge Road.  We were so impressed we agreed we would do a piece on it, and here it is. Primarily Cybele Velo is a training facility for keen cyclists and triathletes.  There are fixed 'bikes' where member and visitors can take part in a wide programme of classes where the machines are set to the ability of the user.  Clips from the Tour de France and other cycle races on the giant screen add an air of authenticity to…

Ride The Lights with Rebecca Alper.

Ride The Lights with Rebecca Alper.

My favourite thing about Ride The Lights is the noise – or rather, the lack of it. As someone who frequently cycles through the busy Starr Gate area at rush hour, there is something magical about the eerie quiet – save for the gentle tinkling of bells and spinning of pedals – that descends for the evening.   The two-wheeled takeover, rechristened Let’s Ride the Lights this year, returns on Tuesday 28 August. Traffic is stopped along the Promenade all the way to Bispham as cyclists enjoy an early preview of the Illuminations before the official Switch-On, as well as…

Run Blackpool parkrun…or run Blackpool parkrun

Run Blackpool parkrun…or run Blackpool parkrun

Earlier this year the national and now international phenomenon that is parkrun came to Blackpool.  Every Saturday at 9am a free timed 5k run / walk takes place in Stanley Park; fun runners gather at the clock tower and make their way to the nearby start.  A team of volunteers ensure that they are able to do their two laps of a circuit round the lake safely and without detriment to other park users. If you are interested in running register yourself at parkrun.co.uk.  You can then print off your barcode, which you will need to get an official time.…

Blackpool Keidokwai, who celebrated their 75th anniversary earlier this year, are thrilled to be hosting such a giant of judo. The Masterclass takes place at Blackpool Keidokwai…

On Saturday 6 May 2017 fans from all over came together to support and march in protest against the continuing ownership at Blackpool by the Oyston family and to highlight that change is needed in football governance throughout the English Football League. The Football Supporters Federation officially endorsed this action as a Fans United Day and representatives from all 92 league clubs joined Blackpool fans to make their voices heard.
