Unique outdoor photography festival is coming to Preston this spring

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] A new outdoor photography festival is set to bring some of the UK’s best documentary photographers to the streets of Preston. Lancashire Photography Festival, created by Preston-based photographer Garry Cook, will display brilliant photography projects in the city this spring, with all images able to be viewed in a safe, socially-distanced way from the street. Photography projects exhibited will also include historical images of Preston and several projects by local Lancashire photographers, who will take part in the festival via a series of free documentary photography workshops.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image="31507" img_size="large" add_caption="yes" alignment="center"][vc_column_text]The festival has been organised with lockdown conditions in…

Front of House: the devastating impact of Covid-19 on musicians

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] “A world without live music feels like living in a house with no windows. Live music is uplifting, it’s nourishing, it’s social glue. It’s well and truly missed by me.” (Participating musician, Rob Young)  [/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image="31137" img_size="large" add_caption="yes" alignment="center"][vc_column_text]Do you miss gigs, live music events, dancing with your friends sloshing a plastic beaker of booze as you break out your moves on the dance floor? It's something I have thought about a lot in lockdown - not so much one to attend the swathes of events I went to in my 20's or late teens but know how those…

Barry Lewis photographs of Blackpool part II: Images of Christmas past

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] Photographing Christmas and the New Year celebrations was a very different experience. [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/3"][vc_single_image image="31292" img_size="large" alignment="center"][/vc_column][vc_column width="2/3"][vc_column_text]I’d stay in a small friendly hotel, full board, with nightly entertainment in its tiny bar and an even tinier room where the sink overhung my bed. Christmas dinner in these places was shared with strangers, who became family and friends, and even included a present! Outside of these holiday-home comforts I’d shelter in warm pubs and steamy cafes from the strong winds and cold rain outside. Life over those days was a continuous pub and club crawl, full of dancing, singing and laughter as the rain whipped past outside. The daytime trips outside, fuelled by a full…

Light Up the Northwest: Shining bright into 2021

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] While scrolling through the Blackpool Social Club Instagram feed, we noticed some striking images of Blackpool that appeared to come straight from sci-fi film.  Jill caught up with Matt from Light Up the Northwest to find out more about his illuminating work. [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_column_text]What's your creative background? My brother Chris (Light Painting the Night) and I don’t really have a creative background, but art and creativity has always had a strong influence on us both throughout our childhood, largely inspired by Neil Buchanan’s ‘Art Attack’. We both have no formal photography training or qualifications, we’ve taught ourselves through a combination…

Barry Lewis photographs of Blackpool “Warmth, excess, fun and surreal humour”

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] “Warmth, excess, fun and surreal humour.” An illustrious photography career found him shooting for Vogue, but for Barry Lewis Blackpool proved a continuous draw. [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Year after year he returned with his camera and the resulting body of work – brought together bursting with colour and life – bristles with a familiar friction between wholesome family daytime fun and an eccentric and hedonistic nightlife. In a series of two articles, he tells Claire Walmsley Griffiths why the town became a place to store his best memories.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image="30876" img_size="large" alignment="center"][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]I still love the seaside – those earliest memories are still released…

Photo Gallery: Small Pleasures During Lockdown, Jill Reidy

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] As for many people around the world, this year has been one of the most difficult I’ve had to endure.  However, I’m one of the lucky ones - so far. Although some members of the family have succumbed to Covid, nobody in my circle has died or even been afflicted badly, and for that, I’m eternally grateful.  I’m also fortunate in that I’m pretty self-contained, and actually quite happy with my own company.  I’m never bored, I can always find something to do, but I’m also very aware that I wouldn’t like to remain in this situation forever. I’m…

Lets Talk About Loss – Claire Watt on her photography series

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Claire Watt is a recent photography graduate based in Blackpool whose work aims to explore connection to contemporary society, how it copes with the inevitability of death and loss, positioned within a post-photographic era in an over saturated image market. Claire recycles images from personal archives and invites collaborators to send their own domestic imagery. Rooted in portraiture, it seeks to document moments which evoke memory and her own past. She chats to Jill Reidy.   Jill: Can you tell me a little bit about your background and how you became interested in photography? Claire: My journey with photography began…

Fleetwood is in the market for creatives

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] Linda Hampton reveals news of the Market House Studios for arts practitioners, above Fleetwood Market. Last year Wyre Council invited local creative practitioners to view the mysterious upstairs rooms over Fleetwood Market. I went along with a posse of my peers to have a peek into spaces that hadn’t been touched for decades. Over two floors the rooms, dating back to 1891, were spacious, although filled with detritus from years of storage, with peeling walls and cracked windows. The exciting news was that major funding had been obtained from the Coastal Communities Fund to transform the building into versatile…
