Lizza Lane chats to Chris Ward about his epic longboarding journey - The Long Push 2012. For the last 8 months, Chris Ward has been planning and training for a 100 mile round trip down the Fylde coast, from Southport and down Blackpool Prom to Fleetwood, with little else than a longboard. This trip is a fundraising event in aid of the charity Families Connected, a charity which offers support to families that deal with autism. Families Connected is close to Chris’s heart. His partner’s son was diagnosed with autism, a social disorder, at the late age of 11. After…

Interview: Blackpool Urban Arts

Caroline meets up with Ollie Tingey of BUA (Blackpool Urban Arts) during one of their Parkour training meet ups to see what it’s all about. Caroline: So Ollie, what is Parkour? Other than bits on TV advertisements I’m afraid I’m a little ignorant. Ollie: Parkour as an art is an activity with the aim of moving from one point to another as efficiently and quickly as possible, using principally the abilities of the human body. It is meant to help one overcome obstacles, which can be anything in the surrounding environment - from branches and rocks to rails and concrete…

Review: Rebellion 2012

Caroline Fisher gives us a round up of Rebellion 2012. Blackpool’s Rebellion festival has once again been and gone (as usual it went far too quickly!) but most who attended are in full agreement that it was a great weekend. This year had even more to offer than ever before with over 6 stages and arts areas showing well over 40 acts per day. It was good to see that almost every area in The Winter Gardens was used this year to include the various activities, ranging from a literary festival with interviews, spoken word and poetry to an ‘Almost…

Cowbell Social a hit

Saturday night saw the first Cowbell Social take place at Blackpool Cricket Club and it was a massive hit! Upon arriving at Blackpool Cricket Club on Saturday night we weren't really sure what to expect from the first ever Cowbell Social. We were pleasantly surprised to see lots of familiar faces once we got through to door and the Cricket Club was a great venue providing the perfect size dance floor (not so big that it looks empty, not so small that you can't move), hardly any queues at the bar, a smoking balcony and plenty of places to sit…

Review: Blackpool Burlesque

The people of Backpool do not do things by halves. So when a burlesque show which focuses on the subtle art of tease comes to town, how does it fare? I had premonitions of young girls surrounded by balding men, pint in hand, shouting ‘get yer tits out’! Having attended previous burlesque shows only in Manchester, I had doubtful expectations on what Blackpool has to offer and they were more than wrong. Blackpool Burlesque is a new entertainment show, playing every other month at West Coast Rock Café, and a pioneer to the growing Blackpool art scene. It is a…
