Lost Inventions, Fantastic Creations

Lost Inventions, Fantastic Creations

Lost Inventions, Fantastic Creations (4-12 October) is the brain child of Adrian Pritchard and his company, Osmosis Machine.  It is supported by LeftCoast and they are hoping it will be the trial run for a science festival in Blackpool.  The exhibition, which sits astride the creative categories of invention and art, can be found at the Baseline Studios in the Houndshill Shopping Centre.  As Adrian says, "Inventors are a bit like artists They are creative entrepreneurs and often eccentric individuals with a special gift for seeing the world in new ways, problem solving and applying their practical skills and knowledge."…

Wandering Sheds, Crazy Inventors and Thumping Beats.

Tonight sees the opening of Inventor Shed. What is The Inventor Shed I hear you ask? I chatted to its creator, Adrian Pritchard, to find out exactly what the mobile shed that you may have spotted around Blackpool is all about. Claire: Tell me all about what is going on? Adrian:  “Inventor Shed” is a shed on wheels that opens up into a mobile gallery and workshop space as part of an arts meets science exhibition “Lost Inventions Fantastic Creations” (4th-12th October). The Shed will pop up around Blackpool Town Centre near Winter Gardens and Houndshill Shopping Centre on the 4th and…

Things are heating up for Smartarts

Things are heating up for Smartarts

A little while ago, I was invited to accompany a group of artists to an amazing foundry as part of a longer term project. Here is what happened on that day and in the following workshop, in the words of the poet, Philip Davenport...   Someone to watch over me Artist Pete Flowers and poet Philip Davenport are currently working with the Smartarts Blackpool group, which are a charitable trust formed from Arts for Health group members wanting to carry on being creative. We are designing a plaque for the new mental health building, The Harbour. Phil writes: Seeing molten…

Groomed Pooches set to shine on catwalk

Look out fashionistas and Vogue-esque dog owners, this Saturday Blackpool is looking forward to what can only be described as a canine spectacular. Dogs in couture will hit the catwalk dressed up to the nines in hand made costumes decorated with lights and other exciting what-nots at Jubilee Gardens, (Nr Gynn Square). The word on the street is that there have been a number of free workshops held at Stanley Park and Fleetwood's Memorial Park where dog owners have been able to create their own designs with professional artists for fido couture. This Saturday at Jubilee Gardens proud dog owners will be able to…

Photography Competition

Photography Competition

We are currently experiencing an Indian Sumer, but there is no denying that those cooler nights are rolling in. There is that familiar smell in the air of autumn in the air. As a photographer, I look forward to that change in light and the trees changing colour from yellow to red to brown - so much opportunity to photograph and capture things in that 'other' way. altBlackpool are delighted to work in conjunction with Harry Ramsden's Blackpool to offer an exciting opportunity to win a free meal worth £25 to enjoy. We are looking for photographers, experienced or amateur,…

Grand Theatre Heritage Open Day

This Saturday 13 September at the Grand Theatre you are invited to take part in a very exciting back stage and heritage tour of The Grade II* listed building as it celebrates its 120th birthday year celebrations. Starting at 10am, the Grand invites the intrepid and the curious to delve into the building's past in a behind the scenes tour of the ‘hidden gem of the North’. The Grand Theatre first opened  23 July 1894 and was built by the leading Victorian architect Frank Matcham. It remains one of the few surviving examples of his work. It has played host to an array of…

Coastal Conflict Breakdance Hits the Floor in Blackpool

Coastal Conflict Breakdance Hits the Floor in Blackpool

For its third year, and supported earlier on in the year by the Grand Theatre's Breakin Convention', Coastal Conflict is back.  It's bigger, better and badder then previous years. I caught up with Joe Rogan to get some background on the ever growing event. Where does the event's name come from? The first word of the event, Coastal, relates to the area where we live and the second word was chosen as a slang term for a dance off. Names that have been used in Hip Hop history over the years have been 'throw down' or'battle' - stemming from 70's and 80's…

Harry Ramsdens: Sparkling Renovations

Harry Ramsdens: Sparkling Renovations

Following a £750,000 renovation, Harry Ramsdens has now re-opened on Blackpool Promenade and it's a bit special.  The re-opening was a swish affair with the the mayor, Val Haynes, in attendance to sample the traditionally delicious grub on offer.  This is fish and chips and chandeliers, a real splash of class for the iconic venue.  AltBlackpool's Claire Griffiths was in attendance to record the event, and sample the fare, naturally.   All images courtesy of C J Griffiths Photography.

Review: Hot Ice 2014

Review: Hot Ice 2014

It's been 24 years since I worked as an usherette at The Hot Ice Show, in the heady summer of love of 1990, and 23 years since I worked in the box office. I spent many a night at the ice rink and knew all the words to the songs of the 1990 show, after watching twice a day for around four months. I always have a warm fuzzy feeling when I think of those days; happy, fun, youthful times and many an after- show party (but that's for sharing down the pub). Back to business. I was delighted to snap up…

Eaglesfest 2014

Eaglesfest 2014

There's not long to go until Eaglefest kicks off for its third year. Beginning in 2011, the local music festival, which is held in Cleveleys, originally began when guitar teacher Phil Roberts passed away. Eaglefest began when one of Phil's guitar tuition pupils said he wanted to do a performance to raise money for the people who had helped Phil. It initially started out as a small event for family and friends but grew and grew and Eaglefest was born. In 2011 they raised over £5,500 and this money was donated to the Christie NHS Foundation Trust and the Blackpool Victoria Hospital…
