Interview: Ska Face

Fiona Jones chats to Blackpool band Ska Face about their motivation, new album and plans for the future. In a room above a warehouse in a secret location on the Fylde coast I am treated to what feels like a private concert by one of my favourite Blackpool based bands. The room is full of men and musical instruments, The England match is playing in the corner and 7 out of 10 of Ska Face are, I’m told, for one of the first times, rehearsing their album in full. Entitled ‘That difficult first album’ the band set out to prove…

Sun shines on Blackpool for Alfresco Cowbell Carnival

Duncan Hodgson gives you a taste of yesterday's Alfresco Cowbell Carnival. The sun was shining yesterday for Alfresco Cowbell Carnival family fun day at Blackpool Cricket Club and the families were out in force. Over 600 tickets were sold on the day alone plus many more in advance. As well as being a fantastic reasonably priced family event, the day was also about raising much needed funds for four local charities. The charities selected for this Alfresco event were Woodlands School, Brian House Hospice, Blue Butterfly and Donna's Dream House who will each get a share of the £2000+ raised on…

Illuminations Switch on 2012

Fiona Jones gives us her take on the Blackpool Illuminations Switch On 2012! Blackpool’s Illuminations in some ways are the epitome of what our little old town is; a flashy, camp, nocturnal crowd pleaser. The illuminations started as a mere 8 arc lamps and 2012 represented the 100th annual switch on, which now kicks off 8 weeks and over 10km of lighting. The concert promised to be a good show so as soon as the ticket lottery started; I leapt at the chance and was lucky enough to get some free wristbands to one of the biggest and best events…

Interview: Karima Francis

As part of altblackpool's Illuminations Week, Duncan Hodgson chats to local singer-songwriter Karima Francis who is performing at this Friday's Illuminations Switch On. Duncan: How did you first get involved in music and make that initial break into the industry? Karima: It was weird because I started drumming at school, I was a bit a naughty kid. I went to Bispham High and they gave me a subject to channel my energies into because I couldn't concentrate in lessons. From that I started drumming in bands in Blackpool, I kept getting melodies into my head and I started singing. I…

Review: Rebellion 2012

Caroline Fisher gives us a round up of Rebellion 2012. Blackpool’s Rebellion festival has once again been and gone (as usual it went far too quickly!) but most who attended are in full agreement that it was a great weekend. This year had even more to offer than ever before with over 6 stages and arts areas showing well over 40 acts per day. It was good to see that almost every area in The Winter Gardens was used this year to include the various activities, ranging from a literary festival with interviews, spoken word and poetry to an ‘Almost…

Cowbell Social a hit

Saturday night saw the first Cowbell Social take place at Blackpool Cricket Club and it was a massive hit! Upon arriving at Blackpool Cricket Club on Saturday night we weren't really sure what to expect from the first ever Cowbell Social. We were pleasantly surprised to see lots of familiar faces once we got through to door and the Cricket Club was a great venue providing the perfect size dance floor (not so big that it looks empty, not so small that you can't move), hardly any queues at the bar, a smoking balcony and plenty of places to sit…
