Bout ‘n’ Proud

Bout ‘n’ Proud

In huge support of Blackpool Pride Weekend, on June 15, our awesome Blackpool Roller Coasters took on the amazing Vagine Regime UK (VRUK) in their very first public skating bout, held at the Norbreck Castle Hotel, Bispham. The ladies of Blackpool Roller Derby League’s A-team had trained hard for the past 18 months in preparation for this significant event, against an extremely high calibre opposition, which included the reputable Victori Bee of Team England! The journey to triumph would be bumpy and maybe a little bruise-y, and for some skaters this would be their first public bout, which can be…

Skaters at Pride

The Blackpool Roller Derby League has this week announced that its newly formed, all female team the Blackpool Roller Coasters will be playing their first public game against The Vagine Regime UK B Team. This will take place on the Sunday of the weekend of the Pride celebrations in Blackpool. The league has come a long way since its humble beginnings 18 months ago, when a group of roller-skating fans came together in a tiny community hall in Bispham. After a short while of wobbling around on hire skates, not really knowing what they were doing, the skaters have all…

RampCity Vert

RampCity Vert

If you think that flares are a bygone fashion statement and a can-can is a a French music hall dance then this probably won't make much sense. If, on the other hand, you have seen the X-Games or Travis Pastrana's Nitro Circus then you will understand that these are complicated and risky moves done by adrenaline junkies on two wheels. Or, to the uninitiated, lunatics on bikes! And I mean that in the nicest possible way. On Sunday 30 March, Ramp City played host to round one of the BMX Vert Series and I finally got my chance to attempt…

The BMX UK Vert Series at Ramp City

The BMX UK Vert Series at Ramp City

There are some exciting alternative goings on going down, literally, at Ramp City in Blackpool. I caught up with Woody, who runs Big Woodys Skateboard shop based at Ramp City, to find out more and discover how people can get involved. If you are not aware, Ramp City is usually targeted at skateboarders so the opportunity to use it for BMXs is a good one. Its not just for the riders either, if you enjoy extreme sports you are welcome to go and watch and take in the atmosphere and there is an awesome café just next door to keep your energy…

Roller Derby Taster Session September 2013

Roller Derby Taster Session September 2013

Last Sunday I nipped down to Blackpool Sports Centre to have a look at Blackpool Roller Derby League which was holding a roller derby taster session as part of Blackpool Sports Centre's open day. Roller derby is a fast-paced, full contact sport played on roller skates. As a league they currently have 50 members and are working towards having two bouting teams. There is a men's team (Blackpool Tower Rangers) and a woman's team (Blackpool Roller Coasters) and they are looking for men and women who are over 18 and think they have what it takes to be part of…
